Medi-Cal Doula Coverage in California
Medi-Cal covers doula services in California at no cost. See if you qualify, verify your benefits, and get matched with a Medi-Cal doula near you.
What may be covered
Medi-Cal, California’s Medicaid program, has covered doula services as a benefit since January 1, 2023 for pregnant members and those pregnant within the past 12 months. No referral is required — DHCS has issued a standing statewide recommendation. Covered services include prenatal doula visits, continuous labor support, and postpartum doula visits, available in person or virtually (including by phone) with no location restrictions. Coverage applies even if a pregnancy ends in miscarriage, stillbirth, or abortion, and continues for up to 12 months postpartum. Services are available through both Medi-Cal managed care plans and fee-for-service Medi-Cal at no cost to eligible members.
Visits and eligibility
The Medi-Cal doula benefit includes 1 initial visit (up to 90 minutes), 8 perinatal visits (prenatal or postpartum), continuous labor and birth support, 2 extended postpartum visits (up to 3 hours each), and up to 9 additional postpartum visits with a written recommendation from a second provider — up to 19 total visits. No prior authorization is required for standard visits. Coverage spans from pregnancy through up to 12 months postpartum.
Labor support
Your Medi-Cal-covered doula provides continuous support throughout your labor, including comfort measures, position changes, breathing techniques, and emotional encouragement. Your doula helps you feel informed, empowered, and respected during your birth.
Postpartum support
Medi-Cal covers postpartum doula visits to support your recovery and transition home. Postpartum support includes newborn care guidance, feeding support, emotional check-ins, and connection to community resources. These visits help reduce postpartum complications and support maternal mental health.

To verify your Medi-Cal doula benefits, contact your managed care health plan (such as IEHP, Health Net, Molina, or your local Medi-Cal plan) and ask about doula services. No referral is required. You can also use our free benefits verification service to confirm your coverage.
