Kaiser Permanente Doula Coverage in California
Kaiser Permanente covers doula support in California. See what’s included, who qualifies, and how to start with an insurance-covered doula at no cost.
What may be covered
Kaiser Permanente covers doula services at no extra cost for California members on Medi-Cal, ACA-compliant plans, KPIF, WARCO, FEHBP/PSHB Medicare, and D-SNP plans, with no copay, deductible, or coinsurance for covered services. No referral is needed. You must use a Kaiser-contracted doula (found in Kaiser’s doula directory); Medi-Cal members may also use a non-contracted doula who is PAVE-enrolled as a Medi-Cal provider. Covered services include prenatal doula visits, continuous labor support, and postpartum doula visits.
Visits and eligibility
For Kaiser Medi-Cal members, the doula benefit follows the California Medi-Cal structure: 1 initial visit (up to 90 minutes), 8 perinatal visits (prenatal or postpartum), continuous labor and birth support, 2 extended postpartum visits (up to 3 hours each), and up to 9 additional postpartum visits with a written recommendation from a second provider. Coverage is available up to 12 months postpartum. Commercial plan visit structures may vary — verify your specific plan details.
Labor support
During labor, your Kaiser-covered doula provides continuous in-person support including position suggestions, breathing techniques, massage, and emotional encouragement. Labor and birth support must be provided in person. Your doula works alongside your Kaiser medical team to ensure you feel informed, supported, and respected throughout your labor and delivery.
Postpartum support
Kaiser covers postpartum doula visits to help you transition home with your new baby. Postpartum support includes newborn care guidance, feeding support, emotional processing of your birth, and screening for postpartum mood concerns. These visits help ensure you and your baby get off to a healthy start.
