For Doulas
What Documents Do California Doulas Need Before Billing Insurance?
Prepare a practical onboarding folder while keeping public profile information separate from private provider documents.
Prepare one accurate professional record
Before onboarding, gather the information that identifies your practice: legal name, professional display name, contact information, and actual service areas. Decide which cities you can travel to and whether you offer virtual care. Consistent information makes it easier to review your application and resolve discrepancies.
Gather your qualifications
Have doula training or certification records, current CPR and first-aid documentation, and professional liability coverage available for review. If a credential is expiring, share its current status and the renewal plan. Do not label a course as completed before you finish it.
The network and applicable payer determine the requirements for the specific arrangement. A general checklist helps you prepare but does not replace their review.
Collect enrollment and billing records
Prepare your individual NPI, any Medi-Cal enrollment approval, and relevant health-plan participation correspondence. Keep effective dates alongside the approvals. If you have not completed enrollment, tell the team which stage you have reached.
Tax and payout information may also be required through the approved onboarding process. Submit those documents only in the designated secure system.
Write a public profile that families can use
Your public biography should describe your approach, services, languages, and travel area. Use a photo you have permission to publish. Private identification documents, tax numbers, and client records do not belong in that profile.
Keep the folder current
Update the team when your credentials, liability policy, contact information, or service area changes. Review the network application requirements, explore enrollment support, and start your application. Submitting documents begins a review; it does not by itself authorize insurance billing.
